The word "quartal" originates from a harmony built from musical notes using a specific distance of a "4th" to create a nontraditional harmony that is neither major nor minor. Each distance (or interval) from one note to the next is known as a perfect fourth. When a harmony of 3 notes is created, the distance from start to finish is further than the traditional harmony that uses 3rds. Add in another 4th, and you have a beautiful 4-note quartal harmony.
